Mastercool "is" cool
I bought this for no other reason than I just wanted to have a cool toy. I am not dissapointed !! what a neat device.
works at least 1/2 mile away, in fact, aiming at the bases of the clouds, even provide a reading, accurate too...as I hand calculated the std temp lapse rate and obtained the cloud bases from weather sources.
I work on computers and taking fan temps, chip temps etc..also, easy to take chilled water line readings of lines that are in the ceiling or hard to reach, is easy and very convenient. the laser point really helps get on target.

Much cheaper than similar products on Ebay..good warranty and customer support, much safer buying here from Amazon too...

Even if you're not a geek, you need one of these..!

I thought that because this was so much less than the other "Big" brands, like Fluke, it would just be just O.k. with average quality and performance. Boy was I wrong! The construction is excellent. The performance is great! Instant readings and real time changes as you move from spot to spot! Very Very Impressed. Great for checking A/C performance.

Does more than I expected
I first used a type of IR thermal-detector about 20 years ago to test the pitot heaters on commercial aircraft. They were far too expensive for me to own back then. I am a big fan of Alton Brown (Good Eats) and when I saw him use one (making fried okra) and say that they were pretty cheap these days, I went shopping for one. I bought the Mastercool MSC52224A based on its specs and accessories and it indeed works extremely well. Hold the button, point it and you get real time temperature readouts. It gives a second reading which holds the highest temp read, and as long as you hold the trigger, you can just walk around and see where the cold or hot spots are. I use it for cooking, but it has more uses. It has a nice case, comes with a standard probe-type analog thermometer, and can show fahrenheit or celsius. I've had mine about a month and it works good so far. It feels solid, and I like that the IR sensor is recessed so that it is not directly exposed to cooking oil bubble-bursts, dust, or debris. Also, this recession is threaded, as if there might be adaptors of some sort available. It has a laser to use as an aiming point. For the price, I am extremely satisfied.
