"Children of Hannibal"

An Unpredictable Caper

Amos Lassen

Male bonding and a road trip are the subjects of Davide Ferrario's "Children of Hannibal". If you can imagine a combination of a bungling bank robber, a hostage who refuses to cooperate, a gay policeman and a situation which goes from bad to worse than you have an idea what this film is about. Domenico is a sad guy and without a job as well. He decides to rob a bank in Turin, Italy and then flee to Switzerland. Of course things do not quite work out that way. The heist is bungled and he ends up with Tommaso as his hostage. Tommaso is a tall, patrician businessman who is on the verge of bankruptcy. He takes over the robbery and convinces Domenico to go south, get some help from a friend of his and then head for Egypt. This doesn't quite work out either as Domenico discovers that Orfeo is not only Tomasso's lover and also a policeman. What was once a couple becomes a threesome and then Tommaso's grown daughter also decides to enter the scheme. It just does not seem that Domenico is going to get out of the country.
For the first half of the film I found myself laughing a lot the entire time but when the daughter played by Valentina Cervi to probably lend balance to the gay plot, the movie began to lose steam. Diego Abatantuono as Domenico and Silvio Orlando as Tomasso are great together bantering between themselves and it is a pity that a female had to be introduced to counter this. Otherwise this is really an enjoyable movie.
