Avg Customer Rating:
Product Description: Mark Bittman, award-winning author of such fundamental books as Fish and Leafy Greens and food columnist for the New York Times ("The Minimalist"), has turned in what has to be the weightiest tome of the year. There are more than 900 pages in this sucker--over 1,500 recipes! This isn't just the big top of cookbooks: it's the entire three-ring circus. This isn't just how to cook everything: it's how to cook everything you have ever wanted to have in your mouth. And then some. Bittman starts with Roasted Buttered Nuts and Real Buttered Popcorn, and moves right along, section by section, from the likes of Black Bean Soup (eight different ways), to Beet and Fennel Salad, to Mussels (Portuguese-style over Pasta), to Cream Scones--and he hasn't even reached seafood, poultry, meat, or vegetables yet, let alone desserts. There are 23 sections in this cookbook (!) that reflect directly on the how-to of cooking, be that equipment, technique, or recipe. Every inch of the way the reader finds Bittman's calm, helpful, encouraging voice. "Anyone can cook," he says at the beginning, "and most everyone should." More than a few college kids are going to head off to their first apartments with Bittman's book under arm. More than a few marriages will benefit with this book on the shelf. And anyone who loves cooking and the sound of a great food voice is going to enjoy letting this book fall open where it may. No matter what the page, it's bound to be a tasty and rewarding experience. --Schuyler Ingle

Customer Reviews
Best. Cooking book. Ever.
I've got a lot of cooking books. I like to cook, but I'm not terribly good at it, having only started cooking (and baking) in the last few years.
This book is by far the best cooking book I've ever owned - can you imagine, reading a book on cooking this big from cover to cover? I did, and enjoyed every minute of it. And went back and read it again.
Does it really cover everything? No, not really. But it does cover *almost* everything that I'm interested in cooking, and that's plenty.
Not only that, but after 20 or so recipes, I've yet to find a single dud.
For someone who's in the beginner to intermediate range, this is a must-have book.

My go-to cookbook
This book is my standard, go-to cookbook. It is extremely comprehensive and easy to follow. I gave away my copy of Joy of Cooking because I realized How to Cook Everything is the only basic cookbook I needed.

useful
This is the cookbook that gets used the most in my kitchen. The recipes are straightforward and easy to follow. I really appreciate the informative discussions about various ingredients and the best ways to cook them (like in the Joy of Cooking).

The title of this book is accurate!
This is an excellent book which includes a broad range of recipes, as well as useful information about food preparation, selection of produce and equipping a kitchen.
The recipes are straightforward to follow, even for more complex dishes.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in cooking.

Very informative, handy book, but if you order from here, make sure to check it upon arrival
Very handy book to have around, I think it will be replacing my old all-inclusive basic 'recipe encyclopedia' type books like Betty Crocker, etc.
I want to put up an alert to those purchasing it here, though - I got mine a few weeks ago and was thumbing through it today, looking for a particular recipe, to find that during the binding process pages 400 - 463 had NOT been included (pretty much the entire section on Meat!) This might be a problem affecting a lot of copies, so be sure to check yours when it arrives.
Update - when I alerted Amazon to the problem with my book, the first customer service rep responded that there were no more in stock and if I sent the copy I had back I would receive a refund. I tried over and over to find the page where I could print a shipping label, link provided by the rep, but got nowhere. I contacted Amazon again and a different rep said they would send another copy out to me right away by 2-day air shipping (guess they found some more, huh?)
Of course by then I'd already gotten another copy, so a co-worker got a freebie. And a vegetarian colleague got the mis-bound one. So 3 happy people - thanks Amazon!
