An Outlaw--A Lady, The Very Best of Jessi Colter
I had forgotten how good Jessi Colter is-- and, in particular I love Storms Never Last, I'm Not Lisa and What Ever Happened to Blue Eyes?.
Her delivery is perfect and the songs strike a place in my soul.

I wish she'd done more.....
What's obvious from the outset on this album was that Jessi Colter is a phenomenal talent. What's obvious from the cover is that she's also gorgeous. However, while I was listening to the disc, I kept thinking that her collaboration/marriage to Waylon Jennings may have actually hurt her career. I believe that if she'd had the marketing push and airplay, we might be talking about her in the same kinds of tones reserved for Tammy, Loretta and Dolly. Also if she'd had the ambition of those other ladies it might have been a different story as well. I'm not knocking contentment per se., but in the record business, contentment generally doesn't lend itself to creativity. I wish she'd made more music and hopefully she'll make more in the future.

Vital for hard-core fans, less compelling for us casuals...
For the price, and the length (18 tracks) it is hard to imagine there is a better bargain out there for Jessi Colter fans. I took a chance on this because I liked her work on the "White Mansions" civil-war CD created by Paul Kennerly back around 1978, and I remembered liking Jessi's big hit, "I'm Not Lisa." As a fan of both her husbands, Duane Eddy and Waylon Jennings, I was also interested in her as a woman, and now as the mother of rising country rocker Shooter Jennings. She has a wonderful voice. The flaw here is that 17 of these tracks were laid down in the '70's, with the typical production values which dominated Nashville at that time. I think I would like a Jessi album from now, with stripped-down production and lyrics of her own writing or choosing, better. Jessi wrote ten of these songs, trying to become a commercial country star. Someone should invest in putting out a CD of newer songs she wrote, reflecting her own life, loves, losses and longings. I would bet that one would be really special.

Incomplete CD
Product was missing one track (Storms Never Last). Tried it on a couple of players, but nothing doing. The blank space was on the CD, but no sound. Our first bad experience with Amazon. We elected to not pursue replacement/refund due to the small amount involved verus the time and trouble required to do so. We'll probably just buy CD's locally in the future.
