Product Description: What could be better than a bunch of Italian horror buffs making their own zombie flick in a spooky abandoned hospital? Being attacked by the real thing, of course. The Dead Hate the Living echoes with such American genre classics as Phantasm, The Evil Dead, and Scream, but it's ultimately a love letter to the nightmarish scenarios and visual freakouts of Italian horror pictures. The hapless crew discovers a creepy black altar (complete with its own decorative corpse) and incorporates it into their film. When their scripted ceremony opens a portal from another dimension and unleashes an army of rampaging zombies, the hallways become flooded in red and blue and green pools of light for no good reason other than it looks cool. The hospital is suddenly adrift in an alternate reality because... well, just because. Writer-director Dave Parker never tries to explain the madness (a zombie's exclamation, "Hate the living! Love the dead!" is as much motive as we're offered), choosing instead to simply plunge viewers into the inspired mayhem. What makes it all work is a love of the genre, a cast of energetic, likable performers, cool zombie makeup, and a sure, stylish hand. Horror movie mavens will pick up on oodles of clever references (a bumper sticker that reads "Fulci lives"; a zombie king commanding, "Make them die... slowly"), but these are merely asides in an accomplished, clever, and remarkably entertaining indie horror riff. --Sean Axmaker

3 stars Stop Messing With Dead Corpses!
Far from perfect. Far from mediocre. I'm very proud to welcome The Dead Hate The Living into the ranks of the "good zombie movies". It's not in the same batch with Romero or Fulci, but this one helps bridge the gap between the "greats" and the "downright awful". I think there has long been a big discrepancy between the two extremes with not a lot of movies falling in that mid-range.

The movie revolves around a young director, named David Poe (Eric Clawson), making his first feature film, and it just happens to be about zombies. Oh, the irony of it all! Do you think he planned it that way? Of course he did, the character of David is really based on much of the life of director David Parker. David Poe's sisters and friends round up the cast and crew for the film. They've decided to break in to an abandoned hospital to make their film. And we all know what happens to people in horror films who do anything illegal or immoral...they die. Not to give anything away, but I'm sure we all know that by now. It wouldn't have been so bad had they left the corpse they found alone. And we all know what happens when you use a real corpse as an unpaid cast member in your new movie that you're making. Well, okay, so that one's not as obvious maybe, I've tried to tell you guys this, but I'll repeat it again for those who missed it. Don't mess with dead things! Just don't do it, it will save you all a lot of pain and grief.

The Dead Hate the Living was a little slow to take off but once it did, it kept the tension till the end. Don't expect to jump out of your seats during the picture, but expect to get some creepy atmosphere. Parker brings us two of the more intimidating and scary zombies you'll ever see.

There was copious amounts of gore, but none of it took away from the story, but rather served to compliment it. I think real horror fans will enjoy this movie because it was directed by a guy who really loves the genre and you can tell. Parker pays homage to many of the greats who have come before him, notably the likes of Carpenter, Fulci, Romero, and Raimi. He also pays homage to great make-up artist and actor Tom Savini and the best S-Mart employee of them all, Bruce Campbell. I challenge you to watch this movie, pay attention to the details, and see how many references to other movies you can find.

If this movie had a higher budget they could have done a lot more with it and it could have been really amazing! That said, I think that Parker did a great job with what he had.

5 stars Don't listen to these Ignoant Dicks!!!!
These guys are being true dicks! they don;t know what goes into making a horror movie or even a movie in general. I do. I am an independant filmmaker and there are alot of things these guys aren't evan paying attention to. In response to that guy who titled his post "I really hate this movie!" Ok, I have seen all the horror movies that they point out and I was far from offended. The director wasn't trying to make a plea to the viewers he was just giving those movies (which by the way consist of Evil Dead, Zombie, Topaz, and numerous others) credit for making the genre what it is and contributing th film history. He was saying that although these movies may not be as popular as they should be they mean something. The dialog was AWESOME!!! I don't know what this guy was smoking but the dialog made the movie. Sure it was kinda campy, but it wasn't stale like alot of "Hollywood" movies I see. It wasn.t recycled, it was fresh and new. The acting, although not the best was far from bad... Obviosly this guy has never been on a film set, especually a horror film set. I have. The character, for the most part, were realistic. And the story was FANTASTIC!!!!!!! People filming a zombie movie actually come across a portal, designed by a scientist studying death, that actually allows you to cross over to a world infested with zombies! They decide to use it in the movie and bring the scientist back to life unleashing hoards of zombies!!! Now that's cool. Unbelievable, sure, but cool nonetheless. It is an awesome concept made by a director that truly understands horror movies that pays omage to all of our favorite horror movies! Don't listen to this guy... he has no idea what makes a good horror movie. Overall I give it: a B+ if your a horror fan, a D- if all you enjoy are big budget hollywood movies and don't particually like horror movies, and a C if you like low budget movies. I give it a 5 star rating because this move's rating has droped dramatically due to all the ignorant dicks who think they know what they are talking about.

2 stars Not good enough
I was disappointed with this movie. Ever since I saw the commercials for it on TV when it was in theatres I had wanted to check it out. The zombies shown there looked really cool and I loved the catchy title.

But it turned out the commercials had been deceptively editing together the few good moments in the film to trick the public into spending their money on this sub-par product. Well, looks like it worked cuz they got my money for this DVD release.

I didn't hate everything about this movie. The two main zombies are actually quite cool. (You'll be amazed to learn in the bonus materials that one of the actors playing them actually LOOKS like his character almost!) And the actor who plays the main baddie (kind of a cross between Rasputin the Mad Monk and Rob Zombie) does put in quite a good performance that almost makes me want to give this movie 3 stars.

Almost. But unfortunately this film has absolutely nothing else going for it. All the other actors in the film are really bad. And the lines are bad. And the characters are annoying. And the story doesn't make a whole lot of sense. And the technical aspects are not good enough. Like many others have said, this film just didn't have enough budget. And not enough of a lot of other things too.

Overall I'd give the film 2.5 stars, but because it just didn't have anything else to offer other than the two positive points I mentioned, I feel it does not deserve any higher than that and I cannot bump it up to a full 3 stars.

It's just not that good, period.

1 stars What were they thinking?
I purchased this movie with the hopes of finding a diamond in the rough. A gem of a movie that would keep my interest even if it is a "B" horror film. That was not the case. This is a "C" movie at best. Throughout the movie they make small references to others who have influenced the zombie industry but this movie really sucks! It isn't even worth the $8.99 I paid for it. I should get my money back. A group of 6th graders could put on a better production. I went into this movie very optimistic and with my eyes wide open but at the end I just wanted to close my eyes and forget about it. I read others reviews and purchased it based off of the reviews. Trust me...don't buy it. I have seen a lot of bad films and this one ranks right up there. If you are in the mood to lose a few brain cells them rent this one...don't buy it.

3 stars Not great, but not to bad either.
This was a surprisingly decent B movie. The effects pretty much sucked, but the zombie makeup was actually a lot better then I was expecting. Over all it almost seemed a bit of a spoof on zombie flicks, and was rather enjoyable. Can't say I'd look to buy it, but is worth seeing.
