got me off the treadmill
I mostly ran on my treadmill because I like to know how far and fast I am running. The Garmin forerunner 101 is absolutely amazing. Turn it on and it keeps track of time, distance, and pace. The signal is strong and the batteries last a long time. Now I'm running mostly outdoors because of this device. It's a must buy! Why did I wait so long?

Basic but enough
This is my 3rd Forerunner. I used 201,205 and recently bought this 101. Battery in my 201 became weak and started to lose power during the run. My 205 have the same thing now and also does not start up. Since most of the problem seems to start from the battery and the connectors over the years, I decided to go with 101 which does not have any exposed connectors and use batteries which you can (or I should say "must") replace yourself. This one seems to find the satellites faster and hold them better than the 201 which I bought when it first came out. I use a pair of rechargeable 1000mAh NiMH AAA batteries which you can specify in the set-up menu. Battery seems to last over 10 hours. Also, it was cheaper to buy this compared to sending the old ones to Garmin for an repair. I lost the capability to import the data into my PC but I am happy for the price I paid for. I hope they modify the straps because if you don't rinse after the run it will start stinking.

I'll never run without a Garmin again
The Garmin is a great product. It is easy to learn (very "intuitive") and makes it so much easier to run new routes while keeping up with distance and pace.
I ran a great time in my first 10k race thanks to my Garmin. I'm relatively new to running and therefore can't pace myself naturally. The Garmin allowed me to tell myself to slow down at times and to speed up at others.

GET THIS IF YOU ARE A SERIOUS RUNNER!!!!!!
The Forerunner is a great tool to learn to pace yourself over distance running. The features on it aid in helping you to achieve goals that you never thought were possible. It is very user friendly (I hardly ever have to refer to the owner's manual) and very lightweight and compact. For the price, you can't beat the benefits of this device. GET IT IF YOU ARE A SERIOUS RUNNER!! Or even a beginner. Or intermediate. The point is this: no matter where you are as a runner, you can benefit from the Forerunner. The only, I mean ONLY, change I could recommend is to have a vibrating pace alert instead of an audible one, since most runners use some sort of iPod type device while running.

A World of Difference
Although I still haven't mastered all of the functions, it has been amazingly helpful in my running. I've been trying to stay on a marathon training schedule which requires a certain amount of mileage each day. Before the Garmin I would have to go measure a route with my car and then run it (major pain in the rear!) It allows me to see my pace per mile so I can moderate so I do not get too overzealous and end up hitting the wall and hitchhiking home. I'm also able to look back at the history of my previous runs to track my progress. The only problem I've encountered so far is when I'm sure I've almost reached 10 miles and I look at the Garmin and I've only gone 3. I'm sure on those days it's just malfunctioning :)
