A True Depiction of America's Western History
I too had this on VHS for many years and was thrilled when it became available on DVD. I've watched it countless times and never grow tired of it. Undoubtably it's the best mini-series ever made, and all the James Michener books are a good lesson in history. He, himself, was a true American treasure. This film has a cast of characters you will always remember.

Fabulous Series!
Although I've had this series in VHS tapes for years, I pre-ordered the DVD version as soon as it was available for ordering and could hardly wait to get it. The wait was totally worth it! The quality of the picture on the DVD version is awesome, especially when compared with the VHS tapes.
The story takes place in a fictional location in Colorado and the scenery is magnificient. The acting is very well done; of course, anything with Robert Conrad, Richard Chamberlain and Vanessa Redgrave, just to name a few, is bound to be good. The series covers virtually every aspect of the West, from the earliest traders, to the settlers, the cowboys, the cattle barons and the farmers, together with the conflict between the two ways of lift, to the immigrants and the tragic fate of many of the American Indians, with a little mystery thrown in to carry the story forward to the present (or at least the present when the film was shot).
I love this series and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves movies about the history of the settlement of the West or anyone who loves Lonesome Dove.
