Product Description: Ideal for a household with a large cat or more than one cat, this big, self-cleaning litter box eliminates most odors while keeping the litter pleasingly fresh for tabby. It's ingenious in design: a cat entering the box triggers a sensor; the sensor sets a timer that counts off 10 minutes; then a rake runs through the litter, scooping out clumps and depositing them in a plastic container at the box's end; the container is automatically sealed until the next cat visit, when the raking cycle opens the container for another deposit. (Twelve reusable, disposable containers are included, each 13 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 3-1/2 inches deep.) The litter box can be plugged into a wall socket (AC adapter included) or operated on eight D-cell batteries (not included). It comes with a durable carpeted ramp that leads a cat into the box and cleans its paws on the way out. For safety, the rake stops and reverses at the slightest touch if an object gets in the way. If a cat re-enters the box before the initial 10 minutes have elapsed, the timer automatically resets. The litter box is made of hard plastic and measures 29 inches long, 8-7/8 inches high, and 16-3/4 inches wide. For proper operation, it requires premium, clumping litter but does not need as much as a nonautomated litter box of the same size. For cleaning, the litter tray can be detached. Instructions for acclimating a cat to the box are included. --Fred Brack

2 stars Defective
The product is defective in that at the end of a cleaning cycle the collection container cover will not close.

1 stars Cat Is Too Darn Big
20+ lb. tabby. His regular pan-type boxes from the supermarket are larger than the litter area of the LM900 (14" x 16" x 8"). He used it once and never went back... just doesn't fit. And cleaning the teeth of the cleaning the rake is a pain.

4 stars so far so good

So far so good with this litterbox. I really wanted an automatic litterbox but was only hesitant because of the mixed reviews on the products. Seems as though they often crap out within a month or so of use. But I've had mine now for a couple of weeks and it's still working quite well. Something that may be key about using one of these things is maintaining the correct amount of litter in the pan. When I slightly overfilled it the other day, I could hear the motor (which powers the automatic rake) working extra hard to comb though the higher level of litter. I suspect this may be a reason some customer's litterbox motor crapped out -- they overfilled the box and the motor quit. My boyfriend joked about putting a hemi engine on it.....hey it might work..... =)

4 stars Worth the money!
I bought the LitterMaid elite about 3 months ago, it didn't take long for one of our cats to take to it; the other took a little longer, but they're both happy now (I do keep a second box available for cat reasons). I started using the tidy cat scooping litter..not premium...because that's what I had; frankly it worked okay!. Now I've purchased Fresh Step and it's working well too.

I agree with everyone who says that 10 minutes is not long enough and there are times when something gets stuck to the rake, but I have found that I am using much less litter than with the old boxes; my boys are happy with it; it's not difficult to clean up.

I took another persons suggestion and I use two of the containers in the machine; I sprinkle a bit of baking soda and kitty litter in the bottom of the container and (because I have two cats) every couple days I go downstairs and scoop the waste from the receptacle into a bag and out the door. The second receptacle gives it more stability and doesn't interfere with the rake action.

When I clean it out, I manually start the rake, scoop out any leftovers or anything that has gotten caught behind the rake and the run the rake a second time; keeps it from getting bogged down..especially if you have a cat who likes his own special corner!

Every few weeks, I remove the rake, wipe it down, empty the entire box out, wipe the thing down and fill it with new litter. This is a machine and some care is necessary!

It is very important to keep the litter level low; the motor will burn out quickly if you consistently over fill; it can't get through that much litter!

I love the product and I'm looking to get a second one for our screened-in porch; the cats like to be out there in the summer and since it is so much cleaner than the old boxes, it's well worth my time and money to buy a second one.

1 stars Cats broke it in 3 weeks
My cats kept playing with the scoop as it was scooping and the safety mechanism stopped it from cleaning. After this happened a few times the box became too clogged to clean and eventually the mechanism broke.
