Product Description: This production of Major League Baseball provides a lively replay of the 1999 season and holds together as a fast-moving highlight tape of the entire year. Taking an approach of alternating the absurd with the fantastic, scenes of hapless fans tumbling out of front-row seats, outfielders running smack into walls, and devilish dugout pranks are contrasted with footage of game-winning homers, seemingly impossible catches in the outfield, and spectacular fielding plays that left fans, not to mention batters, scratching their heads. The induction of the "All Century Team" provides an opportunity for a brief tribute to Ted Williams, and another segment provides a dramatic recap of the season's best game, the 15-inning drama between the Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets in the National League Championship Series. The best team of the year, the New York Yankees, also receives a tribute, complete with highlight films and interviews with players. The quality of the game films used throughout this video is outstanding, the interviews are consistently informative, and the overall lighthearted approach (with introductory titles such as "Best Dugout Antics") make this a very entertaining look at a great year in baseball. --Robert J. McNamara

Customer Reviews
Cool, cool, but not too cool
This is a fun video, no question about it. The boys on my team still remind me of the case of the ground ball that was literally "blown" foul. By the way, it's legal. Or team-mates putting shaving cream on top of one of the players hats. Or, better yet, some of the truly amazing and great plays in this video. That was the upside. The downside is that there's too much talking at times, with some of the players trying to do comedy bits just for the camera. The bits are dated, and at least for us here outside the US, are complete non-sequitor. Ugh. Leave this, and just give us baseball.

Just Shy of Homer Run
Maximum Bloopers & Amazing Plays amounts to a solid highlight reel from the memorable 1999 MLB season. More than just a collection of great plays the video highlights many of the season's most compelling sub-plots: the introduction of All-Century Team, Slammin' Sammy Sosa and Big Mac's dinger encore to their record-breaking season, Pedro Martinez's dominance, the Mets-Braves rivalry, and the Yankee's continued excellence. Importantly, the small market teams are not forgotten, receiving significant coverage in the segments that look at the great fielding and hitting of the season. Overall, the tape is very light on bloopers (which is good thing), letting the excellence of great baseball speak for itself. Yet, the video is not error-free. The great plays are relatively isolated. We see amazing catches, but don't see the ball get hit or even know who hit it, all we get is the catch. Did it save a game or was it part of a meaningless contest among two basement dwellers in September? A little more set-up could have increased the drama inherent in the game. The conclusions to each segment of the video features dozens of big leaguers bootching a simple sign-off -- funny once, tired twice. The ridiculously long recap of the All-Star game homerun derby to a dated swing song also misses the mark. It's a double off the wall -- close to a homer, but just a little short.
