I was disappointed.
The idea sounded great, but I have four cats and so a cartridge only lasts about a week, if that long. And replacing the cartridges that often, is quite costly. Also this is may first experience with the crystal litter. I like the clumping litter much better.

Not Kitties' Favorite, but Works Great
I have 2 male cats (one is 10 lbs, the other a whopping 20 lbs). Before I bought the Scoop Free Self-Cleaning Litter Box, I had to scoop at least once a day, sometimes twice. Now, I only have to mess with the litter box about every week and a half. The packaging says one cartridge can last 2 cats up to 15 days, but mine starts to get a little gross by about 11 days.

Even though the cartridges are pricey, it's so nice not dealing with it everyday! I think the extra cost is worth the convenience.

It's not my kitties' favorite litter box (I still keep a box on our balcony w/clumping litter for when they are lounging out there). I think the crystal litter is still strange to them. If I had to do it over again, I'd transition them over to crystal litter first, and then set up the Scoop Free. Regardless, it's still worked out great for me!

I definitely recommend getting the hood and carpet too. They definitely keep the little crystals from going everywhere (alleviating another former task of sweeping/vacuuming everyday). The hood does seem a little low for my larger cat, but he adapts pretty well.

I would give this five stars, except my cartridges only last 11 days or so, and every once in a while poop gets stuck behind the rake. I just slip a plastic baggie over my hand and toss it in front of the rake for the next time it sweeps. Sure it's gross, but it's a lot less gross than scooping everyday.

If you don't mind paying extra for convenience, and your cats adapt pretty well to new situations, I highly recommend it.

It also does do a very good job of containing the smell. Just in case kitty leaves a particularly smelly deposit, you can push the button and it will rake sooner than the 20 minutes that are programmed. Also, a sticking an air freshener on top of the hood helps, and I also recommend Febreze Air Effects Pet Odor Eliminator.

I just got the scoop free litter box for my two 6mo old kittens about 2 weeks ago. The design is very simple and efficient .There are a few issues that I would like to address. Since I have 2 cats ,if one goes and sets the 20 minute timer then the other one goes, it will back rake the poo to the other side. You have to watch this. I always empty the hopper into the old standby sealed trashcan to control oder. My cats have very stinky poo. I only smell it if I go in after they have gone. I have left them for 3 days already with no problems. The two are totally fascinated by the raking motion. Every time it goes off they have to run over and watch. Quality cat entertainment. I think younger cats do better with this. An older cat might not.
I did ditch the idea of replacement cartridges and bought the Permascoop.com tray. I should save money that way. The Scoop free crystals seem to work the best. You want to make sure that what ever crystal litter you buy its small enough to go through the grate
Remember no litterbox is perfectly maintenance free. You I will need to clean the tray out every time you change the litter.

Love it!
This has been the best $105 dollars I have spent on my cat. Didn't need to train him, he used it right away. Just put it in the same spot at the regular box. There is no more smelly cat poo. The refills are a bit expensive, but this is a well worth it product.

Scoopfree Litter box good investment
I have 3 cats and this scoopfree litter box works very well. With 3 cats
I have another "regular litter box" as well. 2 of my cats are Bengals so
they are very moody anyway and dont like change, but they adjusted just fine and they all 3 use both boxes. The cartridges are too expensive, I have invested in the forever litter box tray that can be found on ebay. This is great! Too bad scoopfree couldnt come up with this solution. The
cartridges are just too expensive to use if you have more than 1 cat!
