Product Description: Having died at age 26, Otis Redding gave only a glimpse--albeit a well-documented one--of what he was capable of doing. These four CDs capture Redding's best moments and give a depth that is essential to Redding and Stax-era R&B fans. Redding shaped Stax's signature soul sound, in part by further livening up already high-powered horn charts and heavy rhythms, and in part by simply singing his heart out to a ringing degree. His early, heavily showy stuff is featured here in the form of "Shout Bamalama," but very quickly this set begins to boast just how categorically awe-inspiring Redding's vocal powers were. He made the heart hurt on scorching love-lost tunes ("That's What My Heart Needs") and then could jar the floor with bursting tempi, complex horn charts and unflagging passion on a tune like "Mr. Pitiful." By the time he was churning out tracks with the estimable instrumental outfit Booker T. & the MG's, Redding's dramatic delivery and awesome power were evenly keeled, ensuring at least an unforgettable performance--many of which are on these four CDs. The first three collect catalog material, from the early tunes (a great vantage on Redding's forming talent) to "Tramp," his erstwhile hit with Carla Thomas, to the jump-out-of-your-seat energy of Sam Cooke's "Chain Gang." The last CD collects live performances, each of which is distinctly unforgettable. Then there's the sure sign of Redding's ascendance, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," recorded within days of this Macon, Georgia, native's tragic early death. For those looking for something more compact than this set, try the anthology Dreams to Remember. Be prepared, however, to feel teased by just two CDs when you could have four. --Andrew Bartlett

5 stars Soulful and good
All, this box set is worth every penny and then some. The included booklet highlighting Otis' career is not only a fantastic recapture, but features articles and passages by some of the greats themselves (I don't want to spoil it!). Disc four is worth buying the set itself--recordings of his songs from live shows throughout his, sadly, short career. Buy it, and you won't be disappointed. I'm gonna let anyone marry me 'til he loves me like Otis can love.

4 stars My turn!
This is a four CD collection covering the career of Otis Redding. The first three discs feature the best of his studio recordings, in mono. The fourth disc includes the best version of every song that Otis recorded live, in stereo. This is subtitled "The Definitive Otis Redding" and it lives up to that title. If you are an Otis fan, you will love it.

5 stars One supreme soulman!
If you don't have this man's music in your collection, then you couldn't possibly be a real fan of music, at least not the category of soul anyway. Otis music was timeless and dynamite. I got a chance to see footage of his performance from a 1967 concert in Norway along with some of the other Stax artist of the time. I was blown away by Mr. Redding's stage presence. He really enjoyed what he did up there on that stage. I'm so glad that i have this box set in my collection. Rest in peace, brotha!

5 stars Simply Divine
This collection is an amazing collection of songs and photos of the late Otis Redding. It is a true treasure!

5 stars Otis in glorious mono!
This is a top-notch boxed set of Otis Redding's material. The first three discs are in their original mono mixes (disc four is a compilation of live material - in stereo mixes and is worth the cost of the collection alone - definitely no filler on this disc). The sound is fantastic. I've owned other compilations of his work and this is, by far, my favorite.
