Avg Customer Rating: 4 stars

Product Description: Veteran ski instructor Lito Tejada-Flores offers an hour filled with intense and detailed lessons designed to move skiers past what he calls "intermediate rut." Making the point that moving from being an intermediate to an expert skier isn't so much an advance in levels but rather learning an entirely new set of skills, Tejada-Flores zeroes in on what those elusive skills are. Much of the focus is on learning to turn properly, and the camera follows expert skiers who show the "proper arc of the turn." Drills are shown during which students are urged to visualize skiing on one foot to get the idea in their head that the "outside ski" during a turn has to handle all the action. The camera work is very good throughout, with much of the action shown in close-ups on the feet. Slow-motion footage is used judiciously to show precisely how a skier should position himself when making perfect turns. The lessons in this video contain a wealth of detail, yet it's presented in a manner that would make it easy to remember, and putting the lessons to work out on the slopes would no doubt be a good way to increase one's skill level. Also included is a booklet that essentially duplicates the information on the video. --Robert J. McNamara

4 stars Great ski lesson... with a couple of cautions...
I love, love, love this ski video. My sister and I ski about 30-40 days a year and we watch this video a LOT. We watch it practically nightly, when we are off skiing. And with every viewing we get something out of the "video lesson".

I agree with nearly all of the positive reviews.

My only caveat... many people are in the Intermediate Rut because of some perpetually hanging on, unbroken bad habit (or habits).

A very common bad habit is being too far back on the skis. I spend the first few days of every ski season... and every ski week for that matter... retraining myself to get those shins solidly in the front of my boots. This is not my natural inclination and I have to really WORK at this habit. Even after years and years of skiing.

And Lito's advice of "And forget that old thing about being forward on your skis. Stand tall... on the middle of your ski... in the middle of your boot..." REALLY set me back for a couple of years. You may be balanced on the middle of your ski... but you still have to be flexed and have that shin FIRMLY in the tongue of your boot!

Another habit... Upper and lower body separation (or dynamic anticipation, as Lito calls it) is also a very difficult concept to master. There are MANY more good tips for working on this skill, in addition to the ones suggested in this video. And taking a lesson may give you some BETTER tips than this video provides for breaking that habit.

Sometimes the best feedback is to have somebody video tape you... and to actually SEE yourself skiing, locked in position with a rigid body. You may FEEL like you are following Lito's advice. You may FEEL like you are skiing with dynamic anticipation, or that you have gotten the habit of upper and lower body anticipation down. But getting feedback from another person, an instructor, a clinic or a video of yourself, can tell you otherwise.

Many, many times the thing that keeps us in an intermediate rut is a bad habit. If you know or suspect that you have a bad habit (or two... or six!) keep working at it. Go ahead and watch this video. It is really GREAT to watch really, really good skiers; skiing really, really, well. He gives a LOT of good tips and advice.

But in addition to this video, get feedback and take some lessons from real life skiing instructors. The tips on this video may not be enough to break your bad habits that are keeping you in that intermediate rut... and, if like me... if you have been told that YOUR particular bad habit, that continues to plague you, is skiing from the back seat... this video my actually encourage your faulty skiing technique.

Thus, my 4 stars rather than 5.

5 stars Out of this world
My wife and I are intermediate skiers who began skiing a couple of years ago. Our first ski was where we were told that 'the wedge' is the ONE and ONLY way to go. After two years we were still stuck with the wedge even down the intermediate slopes. True, the wedge idea got us going, but we were unable to get ouf that rut... unitl we bought this DVD. This is such a wonderful video that I bet it is better than any class out there. The booklet that is attached on the DVD conver summarizes all the lessons. The lessons themselves, are not difficult to memorize as they are all about building your foundations. We improved dramatically overnight. I got the other two videos too. Can't wait to see and learn from them. Good bye Wedge.. and all you ski schools out there...!

5 stars Breakthrough on skis
The best introductory ski video with no equal. I'm an almost an advance skier, but I still watch it before every ski season.

5 stars Excellent training video
I hadn't skiied in 5 years and being older now, wanted to "do it right" this time. I thought about taking a lesson, but I remembered never getting much out of them. After reading other customer reviews about this video, I bought it and I couldn't be happier. No snow plows or wedge christie's here. I studied the video, studiously followed Lito's directions in the accompanying concise booklet and video, and made tremendous progress on the first day on the slopes. I am skiing parallel for the first time in my life and I fully believe in Lito's "one-legged" skiing system. I am amazed at how confident I feel on the slopes because of his techniques. This video is VERY worth the money. I also do the exercises and stretches in a small book called Ski Flex, a very good book with ski-specific exercises in it.

5 stars Worth Every Penny!
I've been skiing since the early 80s and I looked just like all the intermediates that Lito shows on this and his other two videos. I even hurt my knee when one of my skis slid out from under me during a stem turn over ice. I never felt completely in control and my knees and legs always felt wiped out after a long day on the slopes. I have been out twice since viewing this video and I can't believe how much progress I have made so far. He describes very clearly and in great detail exactly how to carve beautiful turns and control your speed without getting so technical that he loses you. You will have to spend a fair amount of time practicing the exercises that he shows on the tape but the work pays off. He explains it all so well that you'll be saying "it can't be that easy" - but it is! The turns I'm making now are clean and graceful and I am more comfortable on steep or icy terrain. The best part, beside feeling like I finally "get it", is that I'm not at all tired or sore at the end of the day! The man is a genius!
