Introducing The Silver Searcher.......
The Ultimate Marvel Universe has always been very fascinating and a great re-imagination of the canon Marvel U. Ultimate Fantastic Four has always been my favorite as it was always fresh and different. Vol 5 continues on this tradition by introducing us to the Ultimate version of The Silver Surfer, who is called Silver Searcher in this universe.
The quality of the book as with the previous hardcover Ultimate FF books is top notch with excellent paper stock and vibrant colors. The hardcover edition collects issues #42 - #53 in the series.
I enjoyed the Silver Searcher story arc, which explains how he was created and his purpose, along with some other twists which I won't spoil. The art by Pasqual Ferry is excellent and fits in neatly with the Ultimate FF universe.
Issues 47-49 are drawn by Mark Brooks, and to me was horrendous. It was boring and slow, and I couldn't keep interest in that arc. The art did not fit the characters in this universe and the story was just awful.
Issues 50-53 throws Thanos and the Cosmic Cube into the mix and is by Top Cow Productions, with art by Tyler Kirkham. The story was semi exciting, but again, the artwork was a letdown as it did not fit into the dynamics of the Ultimate Universe. This story felt more like it should have belonged in the regular marvel universe.
Along with the issues, you also get a few pages of inks and pencils thrown in the back as a "bonus". Nothing really exciting or worth mentioning. It's just 8 pages of some black and white artwork contained in the hardcover.
I would recommend this because the Silver Searcher story arc is worth a read, and if you have the other hardcover editions, you should continue to pick this up to complete your sets. If you are just looking for a good story, and aren't collecting all the hardcovers, just pick up the paperback edition of the Silver Search arc and skip the rest.
