Product Description: Silly but nostalgic, this UPN special from 1999 throws a bone or two to hard-core fans of sundry Star Trek television series and feature films. Seinfeld's Jason Alexander hosts, playing a faux James Tiberius Kirk and perfectly capturing the peculiar music of William Shatner's authoritative curtness and halting pontifications. Alexander's Enterprise captain is on a mission to note popular choices of longtime viewers in a number of areas, from "ultimate one-liner" to "best episode," with the winners previously selected via online voting. Naturally, one is going to take issue with many of the lists--"great beauties" is dominated by Kirk's various conquests, for instance--but that's half the fun, and in any case several categories are total no-brainers: Has there ever been a better Trek villain than Q (John DeLancie)? Speaking of the latter, DeLancie is the most ubiquitous presence in a welcome blooper reel culled from Deep Space Nine and Voyager, the erudite actor of stage and screen hilariously elocution-challenged at times. (The other delightful revelation is visual proof of those rumors that Tim Russ, who plays the starchy Tuvok on Voyager, is the biggest cut-up in Trek production history.) Besides that unexpected treat, there's a fine tribute to the late DeForest Kelley,--Dr. McCoy on the original series--including a couple of non-Trek moments featuring the once-busy character actor opposite Bette Davis and Henry Fonda. As for the "best episode" award, well, the debate over the greatest of Star Trek shows will not likely be satisfied by this program's somewhat dubious winner. Let the argument rage on. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews

4 stars Pretty Funny
The video is a good collection of some of the best scenes from the past 3 decades. Jason Alexander does a good job. The guy who plays McCoy is kinda weak. Spock is OK.

All in all a good video to RENT, if it's available. Else, ask for it as a gift, like I did. ;-)

4 stars Not Necessarily the Greatest Moments - but some good ones!
Caveat: this opinion is from a TOS-only devotee. One must view this with tongue firmly in cheek for the recreated trinity moments, but with gusto for the film clips and bloopers. Especially noteworthy for its affectionate and well-deserved tribute to DeForest Kelley (the only one I saw - shame on you Oscar!).

3 stars It was okay
The only really good things on this tape were the bloopers section, which was all too short, the tribute to DeForrest Kelly, and finding out what the most popular Trek episode was (apparently voted upon on the internet in late 1999). The sections with Jason Alexander and two people supposed to be Spock and Bones were just plain stupid, I would fast forward through them if I were you. I wish the Trek people would come out with a bloopers tape...now that I would definately pay anywhere from $15 to $30 for, depending on how long it was. At any rate, I would suggest that you buy this if you are big fans of Star Trek, and to hopefully show the Trek people that they need to start making more documentaries like this (except perhaps ones that are hosted by someone who is actually funny and have more bloopers!)

5 stars A true collectible.
I was skeptical at first, but "Ultimate Trek" is wonderful. All of my favorite clips, plus some I had never seeen. If you area first time fan, or a long time Trekkie, this one is for you. Great holiday present. thanks.

5 stars GREAT! GREAT GREAT!
Fantastic tape! All my favorites were in here, plus a wonderful tribute to Bones! I highly recommend it!
