One who loved not wisely
I am the producer of this two hour video and I'm very proud of it. It is part of the four-part series Understanding Shakespeare, the Tragedies, available individually or as a four-pack including Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth. Othello is my personal favorite of the four because of the wonderful performances turned in by David Kirkwood (Othello) and Caroline Carrigan (Desdemona). David is a retired U.S. Air Force officer and former Olympic athlete. After retiring from the Air Force he turned to acting as a hobby. He's a superb actor and his power in the role of Othello is awesome. Caroline Carrigan is a marvelous actress who brings to the role of Desdemona a strong yet vulnerable feeling. The main scenes of the play are performed, intercut with a panel of Shakespearean scholars who comment about the meaning of the words, motivations of characters, etc. For students, it's crib notes on video. For regular viewers who just like some substantive drama from time to time, it's enjoyable viewing.

In the Hollywood area, where this video was produced, (actually shot on a stage in the heart of Hollywood)there are hundreds of fine, out-of-work actors who would kill to get the chance to play Othello, or Hamlet, or Macbeth, or even one of the minor characters in a Shakespeare play. For this reason the producer was able to find exceptional actors to fill the roles in the series Understanding Shakespeare, with a modest budget that otherwise couldn't have afforded such talent. David Kirkwood, who played Othello, was a real find. David is a former U.S. Air Force career officer, and a former olympic athelete. His atheletic power really shows in some of the scenes. When he rages in anger, having learned his wife has cheated on him, other actors playing the scene with him became genuinely afraid for their safety. He really chews up the scenery. But he meets his match in Caroline Carrigan, who plays Desdemona. What an actress! Glenn Close move over. The actor who portrays Iago, Rob Grant, does so very capably. The real purpose of the video is to help the viewer understand the play. The panel of experts do a good job. Professors Michael Allen and A.R. Braunmuller of U.C.L.A. are impressive. Dr. Suzanne Collier of CSUN provides the female point of view.

Othello, is a magnificient film showing highlights and details of the important themes such as deception and the urgent issue of male brutality towards women. The outline of the film is fantastic and the language of those times were unique. Film techniques were used in imaginaitive ways and emphasised many parts of the story.I recommend you to watch this film, I have no doubts that you will not find interest in watching it.
