Born to a family that followed the black separatist beliefs of Marcus Garvey, Malcolm Little grew up distrustful of whites, and his father's untimely death, which Malcolm thought was a murder committed by the Ku Klux Klan, solidified his attitudes. Interviews with contemporaries demonstrate how Malcolm drifted into a life of crime, and vowed, during a prison stretch, to devote himself to his newly found religion, the brand of Islam preached by Nation of Islam founder Elijah Mohammed. The rift in the Nation of Islam, in which Malcolm X was pitted against Louis Farrakhan, is capably explained by noted journalist and Malcolm X biographer Peter Goldman, who also describes vividly the assassination of the charismatic leader. Finishing with a bizarre coda, in which a grown daughter of Malcolm was charged with plotting to assassinate Louis Farrakhan in the 1990s, this video does an admirable job of presenting a balanced and coherent view of a controversial man. --Robert J.
