Product Description: This video is the sequel to the beloved children's book and video Anne of Green Gables. It continues the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong young orphan in 1890s Canada, whose hot temper matches her red hair. Anne of Green Gables told of Anne's adoption by an elderly brother and sister, Marilla (Colleen Dewhurst) and Matthew Cuthbert, and her childhood adventures in the idyllic village of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. Anne of Avonlea takes up the story soon after Matthew's death, when Anne has graduated from college. It follows her struggles and adventures as an aspiring writer and English teacher in a private school on the mainland. Girls seven and older, as well as adults, will enjoy this intelligent and beautifully made film, first shown on PBS. It's filled with themes parents can discuss with their daughters--including self-reliance, generosity, and perseverance. It also gives a realistic portrayal of the situation for women during this historical period, through characters that are multifaceted and human. Anne's struggle to find her voice as a writer, to handle difficult people maturely, to stay optimistic despite setbacks, and to nurture her students are both thought provoking and entertaining. Girls will also enjoy Anne's romantic travails, as she tries to decide between two suitors: her childhood friend Gilbert, and a rich, handsome, and mysterious widower. The film is beautifully filmed, and the costumes and settings portray an idyllic time and place. The cast is excellent. Megan Follows as the spirited Anne and Dewhurst as the gruff but tender Marilla give especially fine performances. --Elisabeth Keating

A family adventure
The Sequel to Anne of Green Gables is a Wonderful Addition to the Story.
It keeps you on your toes about what Anne will do next. In this story Anne is growing up and is faced with more challenges. Her best friend is getting Married, She gets offered a great job as a teacher at a strict boarding school, and her relationship with Gilbert gets interesting and has you hanging there at the end. This story is one your family will love. If you loved Anne of Green Gables you will adore the sequel.

Anne of Green Gables - The Sequel
An outstanding movie. The entire series--Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Green Gables - The Sequel, and Anne of Green Gables - The Continuing Story--is excellent. The acting is superb, the scenery is picturesque, and the story line captures your attention

A great sequel
If you liked the first Anne, this sequel will be sure to please. With elements straight from the book series, it continues on with the imperfect yet ever charming Anne as she continues developing into a woman. As before, we find Anne ambitiously pursuing education, but harboring a secret wish to be a great writer. However with her best friend Diana getting married and the people around her growing up and moving on, Anne has to decide what she wants in life (Gilbert?) or whats in her heart.
With a fitting conclusion to satisfy all viewers, this series is a great way for anyone to spend a Sunday afternoon at home with family. The only thing better would be the books!
P.S. While I highly recommend the first two installments in this series, I caution against the third, 'The Continuing Story.' It was a great disappointment... mainly because there is no trace of the original books in this film whatsoever, with the Anne we know and love re-written into a gloomy, plodding melodrama of WW1. I actually yelled at the screen and fought the desire to take the disk out of the player and stomp on it. My advice, stick with the ending from the sequel.

Good Adaptation
Adapting a book can be hard to do well - staying true to the characters people already love is, to me, the most important thing. This film, while it combines plots from 3 books, does a good job of keeping most of the best moments, combining minor characters in a believable way and staying true to the characters LM Montgomery created. It works well, and will be enjoyed by fans of the books and fans of the Sullivan's "Anne of Green Gables" alike. (As oppsed to "The Continuing Story" - if you like these movies, trust me, stop with this one!!)
