Product Description: This rousing musical, based on the stories of Shalom Aleichem, takes place in pre-revolutionary Russia and centers on the life of Tevye (Topol), a milkman who is trying to keep his family's traditions in place while marrying off his three older daughters. Yet, times are changing and the daughters want to make their own matches, breaking free of many of the constricting customs required of them by Judaism. In the background of these events, Russia is on the brink of revolution and Jews are feeling increasingly unwelcome in their villages. Tevye--who expresses his desire for sameness in the opening number, "Tradition"--is trying to keep everyone, and everything, together. The movie is strongly allegorical--Tevye represents the common man--but it does it dexterously, and the resulting film is a stunning work of art. The music is excellent (it won Oscars for the scoring and the sound), with plenty of familiar songs such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "If I Were a Rich Man," which you'll be humming long after the movie is over. Isaac Stern's violin--he provides the music for the fiddler on the roof--is hauntingly beautiful. And despite the serious subject matter, the film is quite comedic in parts; it also well deserves the Oscar it won for cinematography. --Jenny Brown

Timeless
This must be the 3rd of 5th format I have had this movie in. I first had it as a Beta fromat movie, the the VHS, I have had it in Laser Disc and now DVD. It is a timeless classic. Its lessons are very applicbale even in today's era. The cinematography is just unbelievable. Now, with the comments by those who were involving in getting the movie to where it is, the stature of the Fiddler is further elevated. A movie that my daughter and I used to watch together. Now we still do.
As I have said, timeless....

NOT NECESSARELY FOR JEWISH PERSONS
Fully restored to its original length, intermission and all, the last great musical from Broadway to the screen, settled at the end the the Czarit Russia, this three Oscar Winner movie, has a beautyfull photography, Art and Set Decoration (shooted in former Yugoslavia), and the masterfull touch of the great Maestro John Williams, conducting the London Symphony Orchestra

Fiddler on the Roof is a 1971 film version of the Broadway musical about a Ukrainian Jewish Family circa 1905 Tsarist Russia. I normally don't care for musicals, but I really liked this one. It won three Academy Awards, including one for arranger -conductor John Williams. It was nominated for a number of others, including Best Picture, Best Actior Chaim Yopolas Tevye and Best Supporting Actor for Leonartd Frey, who played Motel the Tailor( both had originally acted in the musical; Topol as Tevye in the London production Frey in a minor part as the rabbi's son). The decision to cast Topol as Tevye instead of Zero Mostel was a somewhat controversial one, as the role had originated with Mostel and he had made it famous.
Recording was done at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England. Most of the exterior shots were done in Croatia in Mala Gorica, Lekenik and Zagreb
The film follows the plot of ther stage play very closely, although it omits the songs "Now I Have Everything" and "The Rumor". It takes place in the Jewih Village Anatevka in Tsarist Russia 1905 and centers on the character of Tevye a poor milkman, and his daughters' marriages. As Tevye says in the introductory narration, the Jews have relied upon their traditions to maintain the stability of their way of life for centuries; but as times change, that stability is threatened on the small scale by Tevye's daughters' wishes to marry men not chosen in the traditional way by the matchmaker and on the large scale by popgroms and revolution in Russia. Probably my favorite songs are "Tradition" and "Matchmaker" And "Do You Love Me"

A timeless classic
For teachers who have to teach Open Court, this story fits in beautifully with the Heritage Unit, The Night Journey. It helps students understand the persecution of Jews during Tzarist Russia. Also, powerful music and incredible acting. A must have.
