Product Description: James Stewart, at his warmest and most avuncular, plays the bandleader who rocketed to fame during the swing era. The Glenn Miller Story may be a whitewashed version of Miller's life, but it certainly is a pleasant example of the feel-good Hollywood biopic, with the usual conventions: early struggles, loyal wife (June Allyson at her chirpiest), personal sacrifice--Miller joins the Army when war breaks out, although he doesn't have to--and ultimate tragedy. All the Glenn Miller classics filling the soundtrack make the film pretty easy to take, too: "Moonlight Serenade," "A String of Pearls," "Chattanooga Choo-Choo." Miller plays the great "In the Mood" with his military band during a World War II air-raid warning. Pure corn, but it works. Director Anthony Mann, better known for his superb series of hard-bitten fifties westerns with Stewart, keeps the story moving gently and gracefully. A hot jazz interlude features Louis Armstrong and Gene Krupa. --Robert Horton

4 stars Great true life musician story
This is a great true life story movie, classic family movie, great music-musician movie. Who doesn't love Jimmy Stewart? Who didn't love Glenn Miller? Okay, maybe you're too young to get this, but then, I wasn't alive when this was going on and I know how historically important the period was. If WWII was an era you're a little fuzzy on, it's the momentous series of events that shape our modern world, and one way to make history come alive and be interesting is to delve into the arts, the music, the popular culture of the time. American music then dominated the whole world, just like American hip-hop spread around the globe in the 1990s. In the WWII period, big band swing became an international phenomena. The Imperial Japanese listened to it, the Nazis listened to it, but most of all, American G.I.s overseas, the Americans working in the factories, big band swing defined America and American pride. And Glenn Miller's band was as close as the U.S. came to having an official patriotic emotional popular national band. Parts of the movie suffer from the same problems all movies of the post WWII era genre have, the soundtrack timing is off so that even though the real Glenn Miller orchestra is playing themselves, they're not always playing in synch with the movie, and some of the dialogue is excessive, some of the waiting scenes are too long, but on the other hand, this is a completely family friendly movie, no gratuitous sex scenes, no harsh language, no senseless violence (well there is the whole WWII thing as the historic backdrop, but no violence is depicted). I highly recommend this film to: music students, music fans, musicians, music teachers, jazz fans, swing band fans, history buffs, WWII buffs, history teachers, fans of classic movies, Jimmy Stewart fans, anyone who has never heard of Jimmy Stewart, anyone unclear on Glenn Miller or swing music, anyone who has never seen a movie made before the 1970s, parents who are tired of the postmodern Disney drivel wanting a film you can watch with kids without fast forwarding past awkward scenes, and people who like biographies.

5 stars Glenn Miller Story DVD
Good movie. Depicts Glenn Miller well and Tyrone Power does a good jobing of imitating him. Great music if you're one of the oldie favorites.

4 stars Glenn Miller gets the Hollywood treatment.
Big band legend Glenn Miller gets the Hollywood treament of his life in this wonderful film starring Jimmy Stewart as the ill-fated band leader and June Allyson as his wife,Helen.I say the Hollywood treatment because that's exactly what this is, as the truth is sprinkled sparsely throughout. But the story after all is what makes or breaks a film and despite the inconsistencies that abound here(which are oblivious to the uninformed viewer) it comes across very well and manages to at least give us the essence of the man in question in a very entertaining fashion.
Henry Morgan who plays Glenns' close friend Chummy McGregor is portrayed as having knew Glenn almost all of his life.In real life Glenn first met Chummy in 1932 when playing with the Smith Ballew band. Also Glenn is portrayed as a kind of a dreaming adolescent while Chummy comes across as the stronger of the two.In real life the opposite was true.Glenn generally knew what he wanted while Chummy was very dependant on Glenn.
George Simon, the famous Downbeat critic and writer of various books on big bands including Glenn himself(he was a close personal friend of his),said the most true portrayal was by June Allyson. The love and bond between the two on film was the same as in real life.Jimmy Stewart he said did a great portrayal of...Jimmy Stewart.Overall I think I have to agree with Mr.Simons' assessment,as much as I like Mr.Stewarts' body of work.
The only other drawback here is the film itself. It has NOT been remastered. If they had remastered it the numerous minor artifacts would have been gone and the picture would have been a little cleaner and much crisper. But they used a pretty good print so it is at least more than adequate.
The most important and best thing about this film however is the music. That wonderful Glenn Miller music using the original arrangements and played in studio by alot of members of the original band,is here in all its' glory. You more than once find your self tapping your feet and singing along when the musical interludes arrive. And to help things along we get appearances by some of the original players in the real life of Glenn Miller like musicians Ben Pollack,Gene Krupa and Louis Armstrong.
As I said the story in general comes across very well and in the end as a crying June/Helen is listening to a Christmas concert, minus her screen hubby, there is not a dry in the house. It never fails to tug at the heart strings which is exactly what this movie succeeds at doing best throughout its' 113 minute run.
I recommend this film highly. It has a good plot that moves along very well all wrapped around the greatest big band music one is ever going to hear as originally arranged by the greatest leader of them all,Glenn Miller.

5 stars Lovely Movie
I'm only 24 years old, but I am so wistful about the 30's and 40's. I saw this movie a few days ago on TCM, but I just purchased it on-line. I can't review the DVD itself, because I haven't received it, but I can tell you that this is such a great tale. Glenn Miller and his music are great; and this gives you a chance to see the kind of relationship he had with his wife. Since the way he passed away is so well-known, I found myself dreading the end of the movie. I wish it could have ended differently, but then it wouldn't be "The Glenn Miller Story." I would recommend this movie to anyone.
